A thread lift is a procedure where everything from the choice of thread material to the physician's skill deserves careful consideration. Today I'll walk you through the diagnosis and planning process at Seoul Cheongdam Dr. Anapa Clinic.
■ Treated in person by a physician who took part in developing Korea's barbed threads from the start Written by: Dr. Ahn Jae-seok, Seoul Cheongdam Dr. Anapa Clinic ※ This content was written in compliance with the Korean Medical Service Act and related regulations. The appropriate procedure and results may vary depending on individual skin condition and degree of aging.
With thread lifting, who developed the thread and who performs the procedure matter more than which thread is used. Thread lifts are offered at many medical institutions today, but few people know how the barbed threads in use now were first created and how they evolved.
I am a physician who took part directly in the development of barbed thread lifting in Korea in 2009. At the time, I researched a new concept of thread lifting with CEO Si-dae Yoo and was part of the evolution of barbed threads in Korea.
■ How barbed threads began in Korea In 2009, barbed threads in their current form did not exist in Korea. I proposed to CEO Si-dae Yoo the concept that "using barbs would let the thread support tissue more effectively," and based on this, development of Korea's first unidirectional barbed thread began.
As we proceeded with clinical use, we discovered an important limitation. Because unidirectional barbed threads support tissue in only one direction when inserted, their lifting and anchoring strength were limited. To solve this, I proposed the concept of "bidirectional barbs" that grip tissue in both directions, and bidirectional barbed threads were developed based on it.
The core concept of the bidirectional cog thread lifts widely used today evolved through this clinical experience and repeated research. This development process can be objectively verified through related materials and records.

■ A developer approaches the procedure differently Developing a new medical device isn't simply about making a product. ・ Which layer the thread is most effective in ・ Which direction it should be inserted ・ How the angle and arrangement of the barbs support the tissue ・ Which design looks most natural given facial anatomy and the direction of aging All of these require extensive research and clinical validation.
Because I was involved from the development stage, I design thread lifts from a different perspective than physicians who simply use the product.

This is the thread I helped develop
■ More than 17 years of thread lift clinical experience Since the development of barbed threads in Korea, I have performed thread lifts for more than 17 years and have seen a wide variety of face shapes and aging patterns. ・ Anatomical knowledge as an anesthesiology and pain medicine specialist ・ Facial procedure experience including more than 20,000 facial fat grafting cases ・ Ongoing research in nonsurgical anti-aging Based on this, my goal is not simply to pull the skin, but to achieve balance across the whole face and a natural-looking change.
■ How a thread lift works at Seoul Cheongdam Dr. Anapa
-
Facial aging analysis: We comprehensively assess skin thickness, fat volume, direction of sagging, and the condition of the SMAS layer.
-
Customized design: Considering the characteristics of different threads such as PDO, PLLA, and PCL along with your facial structure, we plan the appropriate type and insertion direction.
-
Anatomical lifting: Rather than simply inserting many threads, we perform a natural lift that takes facial movement and tension into account.
-
Aftercare: We check your progress after the procedure and guide you on any needed skin care and how to maintain results.

■ Frequently asked questions Q. Can I come in to Dasan New Town or Namyangju just for a thread lift consultation? A. Yes. After a thorough diagnostic consultation, we'll first explain the approach that suits your current condition. Q. I had a thread lift elsewhere and wasn't satisfied with the results. Can I still get a consultation?
A. Yes. After checking the state of your previous procedure, we'll discuss together whether to redo it and how. Q. How long should I avoid swimming or exercise after the procedure? A. It's best to avoid strenuous exercise and swimming for a while, until the threads have settled into the tissue. Be especially careful with activities that expose the entry points to water for a long time, such as swimming pools and saunas, because of the risk of infection. When you can resume depends on the treated area and the type of thread, so following the personal recovery schedule we give you after the procedure is the safest approach.
Q. Will I notice the effect of a thread lift right away? A. Yes. Compared with other procedures, the effect of a thread lift tends to be felt relatively quickly. Because the threads physically lift the tissue as soon as they're inserted, you may feel your cheek and jawline look more defined right after the procedure. Over time, collagen forms around the threads and adds firmness as a secondary effect, so the natural lifting effect continues as time passes. However, the final contour isn't fully settled until the swelling goes down, so we recommend judging the actual result after the swelling has subsided.
Q. How long do bruising and swelling last after the procedure? A. It varies from person to person, but swelling is generally most noticeable for 2–3 days after the procedure and then gradually subsides. If bruising occurs, it usually fades within a week, though it may last a little longer in areas with thin skin or many blood vessels. The degree of swelling and bruising can vary with the treatment area, number of threads, and individual skin condition, so the personal care instructions we give you after the procedure are the most accurate guide to your recovery.
