Facial Fat Grafting Cost: 5 Things to Check Before Comparing Prices

Dr. Ahn Jae-seok of Seoul Cheongdam Dr. Anapa Clinic in Dasan, Namyangju, outlines five things to check before comparing facial fat grafting costs. Before your consultation, review the treatment areas and extent, how many staged sessions are planned, the doctor's experience and safety measures, and what the final price includes, such as anesthesia, VAT, and additional procedures.

Hello.

I'm Dr. Ahn Jae-seok, director of Seoul Cheongdam Dr. Anapa Clinic in Dasan, Namyangju.

When you start looking into facial fat grafting, the first thing you probably want to know is the cost.

"How much is it if I do my forehead and cheeks together?"

"Is that the price for the whole face?"

"Does it include a second session?"

Of course you should ask. When the same fat grafting procedure is priced differently at different clinics, you can't help but wonder what's different.

But as someone who has performed fat grafting for many years, there are a few things I'd like you to look at along with the price: which areas will be treated and how much fat will be placed, how many sessions it will be done in, and how your recovery will be monitored.

Over the years I have performed 15,000 fat grafting procedures. In 2010, at the U.I.M.E. World Congress of Aesthetic Medicine in Beijing, China, I presented a new fat grafting technique performed in five staged sessions.

Even then, my focus wasn't only on the volume immediately after the procedure. I wanted to consider the discomfort patients experience during recovery, their daily lives, and how their face changes step by step.

Based on that experience, here are five things to check before comparing facial fat grafting costs.

1. Does My Face Really Need Fat?

Looking older doesn't mean everyone needs fat grafting.

Some people have hollow cheeks or temples, while others have cheeks that have sagged downward. In some cases, the skin has thinned and fine lines have increased. Even if people look similarly tired on the surface, the causes can differ.

For example, if smile lines are your concern, you first need to determine whether the surrounding area lacks volume or whether the cheek tissue has sagged. Under the eyes, too, you need to check whether hollowness and puffiness are present together.

If you fill every area that looks hollow without considering these differences, the result may not match the look you were hoping for.

When I look at a face, I consider it important to assess the overall contour and balance rather than looking at just the forehead or cheeks in isolation.

At your consultation, ask:

"Is my face lacking volume, or is sagging the problem?"

Only after hearing a thorough answer to this question can you decide whether to go ahead with fat grafting or consider another option.

2. Which Areas Are Included in a "Full-Face" Price?

Even if it's called full-face fat grafting, you need to check whether the actual treatment area is the same.

Check whether it focuses on the forehead and front of the cheeks, whether it includes the temples and sides of the cheeks, and how areas that need separate judgment, such as under the eyes, are planned.

Even with the same cheek hollowness, the extent and the difference between the left and right sides vary. If you've had fillers or fat grafting before, that history can also affect the plan.

And treating the full face doesn't mean fat has to go into every area.

Areas that already have enough volume may be better left alone. If the two sides of the face differ, the amount and placement needed may differ too.

Many people ask, "How many cc will you put in?" but it's hard to compare procedures by volume injected alone. With the same amount, what matters is where and how it's placed.

When comparing prices, I hope you'll also confirm the treatment areas and why each area was chosen.

3. Is It Done All at Once or in Stages?

This is something I've been interested in and researching for a long time.

What I presented at the 2010 U.I.M.E. World Congress of Aesthetic Medicine in Beijing, China, was also a fat grafting technique performed in five staged sessions.

The presentation covered an approach of performing facial fat grafting over several sessions, as well as a treatment approach that takes into account the patient's recovery burden and daily life.

That's because I felt that how patients experience the process mattered, not just the changes in their face.

However, this presentation doesn't mean I recommend five fat grafting sessions for everyone. Dividing the procedure into stages doesn't eliminate swelling or complications, either.

The number of sessions and the interval you need now should be decided individually based on your facial condition, how your recovery progresses, and the change you want.

So when comparing costs, you need to distinguish whether the price is for a single session or the total cost of a staged treatment plan.

If you've been told a "second session is included," check the following as well:

  • In what cases an additional session is performed
  • The time frame and conditions that apply
  • Whether additional fat harvesting is needed
  • Whether there are separate charges such as anesthesia fees

More sessions aren't automatically better, and finishing in one session isn't always better either. What comes first is hearing why the plan was designed that way.

4. Have You Checked the Doctor's Experience and Safety Measures?

The doctor's fat grafting experience is worth checking.

But rather than looking only at the numbers, I hope you'll also look at how the doctor assesses your face and what limitations they explain.

I trained at Seoul National University Hospital and became board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine in 2000. Since then, I have continued research and clinical practice in Gangnam for more than 18 years, with an ongoing interest in fat grafting techniques and the recovery process.

My experience with 15,000 fat grafting procedures and my international conference presentations are a record of that clinical work and research. They don't mean the same results are guaranteed for every patient.

Because facial structure, skin condition, and previous treatment history differ, each case has to be assessed anew.

Fat grafting uses your own fat, but it isn't free of side effects. Bruising, swelling, infection, asymmetry, fat necrosis, and surface irregularities can occur, and in rare cases serious vascular complications can also develop.

At your consultation, find out who will actually perform the procedure, whether your health status and medications are checked, and how you'll be monitored during anesthesia. You should also confirm how to contact the clinic and get care if unusual symptoms develop after the procedure.

I hope you'll get a full explanation of not only what may improve but also what problems could arise.

5. Is the First Price You're Quoted the Final Cost?

The last point is what the cost includes.

Even if the initial quotes look similar, your actual out-of-pocket cost may differ if different items are included.

Check the following:

  • Fat harvesting and facial injection fees
  • Anesthesia fees
  • VAT
  • Medication and aftercare fees
  • Follow-up visits
  • Fees for additional sessions or re-harvesting

With fat grafting, not only the face but also the area where fat was harvested needs to recover. It's a good idea to get an explanation of how to care for the harvest site and what precautions to take.

If there are extra charges tied to procedure names such as "microfat" or "stem-cell-assisted fat grafting," confirm what additional steps are involved and why you need them. You can't judge graft take or results by the name alone.

For facial fat grafting at Seoul Cheongdam Dr. Anapa Clinic as well, please confirm the cost at your consultation based on the actual treatment areas, number of sessions, and included items.

What I Consider Important in a Fat Grafting Consultation

The change the patient wants and the change the doctor has in mind need to match.

Some people want just a little more fullness in the front of the cheeks, while others are concerned about a hollow look across the whole face. Some also worry that people around them will notice they've had something done.

That's why we need to talk thoroughly not only about which areas concern you but also about how much change you want.

These same concerns were behind the multi-session fat grafting technique I presented at the 2010 conference. I wanted to consider not just how patients look after the procedure but also their daily lives and recovery.

My standard today remains the same.

Deciding which areas can be left alone is just as important as deciding where to add volume. The number of sessions and the amount injected should also be determined according to that judgment.

Facial Fat Grafting: Ask This Question at Your Consultation

Once you've checked the price, I hope you'll ask one more thing.

"For my face, where, why, and over how many sessions should the procedure be done?"

Once you hear the answer, it should become a little clearer why clinics quote different prices and what procedure you actually need.

To anyone considering fat grafting at Seoul Cheongdam Dr. Anapa Clinic in Dasan, Namyangju, I also say: make your decision after getting a thorough explanation.

Your face is something you see and live with every day. Cost matters, but I hope you'll make your choice with a clear understanding of the change you want and the treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Since you presented a five-stage fat grafting technique, do I have to have five sessions?

No. The staged approach presented at that time should be distinguished from the number of sessions an individual needs today. The number of sessions is decided based on your facial condition and progress.

Q. Is fat grafting permanent after one session?

Some of the grafted fat may be absorbed, and graft take varies from person to person. Even after the fat has taken, your face can change with weight changes and aging, so we can't promise that the initial result will last permanently.

Q. Does a higher price mean better graft take?

You can't judge graft take by price alone. Many factors need to be considered together, including the treatment plan and technique and the condition of your tissues.

Q. Is how I look right after the procedure the final result?

There is swelling at first, and volume may change afterward. Results should be evaluated after allowing enough time to observe your progress.

※ Fat grafting is a medical procedure that involves harvesting and injecting fat. Effects and recovery vary from person to person, and bruising, swelling, pain, infection, asymmetry, fat necrosis, surface irregularities, and rare but serious vascular complications may occur. Please make your decision after consulting thoroughly with your doctor.
